Wireless earbuds care: fit, cleaning and battery tips
Wireless earbuds live in pockets, bags and ears all day, so a little care goes a long way. These habits keep them sounding good, holding a charge and fitting comfortably for longer.
Get the fit right first
Most "my earbuds sound thin" complaints come down to fit. Bass and noise isolation depend on a good seal in your ear canal.
- Try every ear tip size in the box, and don't assume both ears take the same size.
- Insert the bud, then give it a slight twist so the stem points down towards your jaw.
- If your earbuds have a fit test in their companion app or settings, run it after changing tips.
Keep them clean
Earwax and dust build up on the mesh and slowly muffle the sound. Clean them every week or two:
- Wipe the buds and the inside of the case with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Use a soft, dry brush (a clean, soft toothbrush works) on the speaker mesh, holding the mesh facing down so debris falls out rather than in.
- Remove silicone tips and rinse them in plain water, then let them dry completely before refitting.
- Avoid running water, sharp objects or pushing anything into the mesh.
Don't forget the charging contacts inside the case. A quick wipe stops dirt from causing patchy charging.
Look after the battery
- Store the buds in their case so they stay charged and protected.
- Avoid leaving the case in a hot car or in direct sun; heat is the main thing that wears batteries out.
- If you won't use them for a few weeks, store them partly charged rather than completely flat.
- Install firmware updates when your phone offers them. They often improve battery life, connection stability and call quality.
Connection hiccups
If one bud stops connecting or the sound cuts out, put both buds back in the case, close the lid for a few seconds and try again. If that doesn't help, remove the earbuds from your phone's Bluetooth list and pair them again from scratch.
